All images on this site come from freely licensed collections, mostly from Wikimedia Commons. Every image is credited individually with author, licence and source, directly beneath the image and again in this overview. Images without a clarified licence are not used.

How images are credited on this site

Beneath each image is a line following this pattern: subject, photo, name of the author, Wikimedia Commons, licence name with version. The licence name links to the licence text, the author's name to the file description page on Commons. This satisfies the attribution and licence requirements of the Creative Commons licences.

The image files are hosted on this website's own server and are not embedded from third-party servers. The reason is data protection: embedding external sources would transmit visitors' IP addresses to the third-party server.

All files were reduced to a maximum width of 1100 pixels and compressed for the web. Under CC BY-SA licences, changes of this kind do not count as adaptations in the legal sense, so the licence remains unchanged.

Which licences apply

Three cases are common on Wikimedia Commons. Images under CC BY require the author to be named. Images under CC BY-SA additionally require adaptations to be passed on under the same licence. Public domain images, usually old photographs and engravings, can be used without conditions, but should still be credited with a source, because that keeps their provenance traceable.

The licence version always belongs with the credit. CC BY-SA 3.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0 are different licences with different conditions. A credit reading merely "CC" does not satisfy the licence terms.

Reporting errors

If a credit is incomplete or wrong, or if you are the author of an image used here and object to the attribution, please get in touch using the contact details in the legal notice. Incorrect credits will be corrected and disputed images removed pending clarification.
